Modern Healthcare cited findings from a HCFO-funded study by Matthew Maciejewski, Ph.D., Duke University and Durham Veteran’s Administration.

HCFO grantees Glenn Melnick, University of Southern California, and James Robinson, University of California, Berkeley, were quoted in a New York Times article on hospital prices. Melnick stated that hospital charges are set by the hospital without market constraints; the arbitrary nature of these charges contributes to increases in health care spending and inflation.

HCFO grantee Lan Zhao, Ph.D., Social & Scientific Systems, Inc., expanded the scope of her HCFO-funded study on observation services (OS) in an AARP Public Policy Institute report. Zhao and colleagues found that both the frequency and duration of hospital OS increased between 2001 and 2009.
