The Incidental Economist and the AcademyHealth blog featured findings from a systematic review of value-based insurance design (VBID) studies. In this review, researcher Matt Maciejewski, Durham VA Medical Center and Duke University, and his colleagues examined the impact of VBID policies on medication adherence and medical expenditures. They found that across 13 studies, reductions in medication copayments consistently lead to significant increases in medication adherence but did not lead to overall cost reduction. The work was funded in part by the HCFO program.
